Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

If I had to say, I'd probably declare Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom my favorite Jones movie.  When I think "Indiana Jones", imagery from this movie is what pops into my head.  I finally finished my Indiana Jones rewatch after seeing this today...finally!

I'd forgotten how over the top this movie is.  From being chased by raging water to almost falling off a bridge to sword fights in a couple of minutes...it's pretty ridiculous.  This movie also has a bunch of stupid stereotypes about women and Indian people (that aren't even true or real stereotypes, haha).  Still, though, it's a good adventure.

Also, Indiana Jones wouldn't have been nearly as good with a different background score.

I'd forgotten this opening sequence was even in the movie!

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Guess Who's Coming to Dinner is a whole lot of talking.  I mean, the whole movie was people talking.  Mom talking to daughter.  Mom talking to boyfriend.  Boyfriend talking to dad.  Boyfriend talking to daughter.  And so on forever, everybody giving opinions and checking in on other peoples' opinions.  As if the opinions of all the parents weren't enough, they add in a maid and a Catholic priest (even though no one is Catholic) to chime in with opinions, too.   The worst part is at the end of the movie when Spencer Tracy gives everyone a speech and recaps the whole movie when the whole movie was just people talking to each other!  I mean, I'm making it sound worse than it really is, but there seriously was A LOT OF TALKING.

It's like a math word problem from the SAT or something:  If you have a black guy and a white girl who want to get married, and they each have a set of parents, plus a maid and a priest, how many opinions must be shared among the whole group?

I also thought this movie was set earlier than in the 70s for some reason.  I don't know what the reaction was like when this first came out, I should look into that.

But Sidney Poitier has such a handsome, boyish face in this~

The Ten Commandments (1956)

god was pretty impressive

So, I'm an atheist but I still figured that I should watch The Ten Commandments.  The movie was kind of interesting at first because the story is familiar (I was brought up a Catholic), but after more than three hours my interest in the doings of these nutcases waned considerably.  It's pretty mind boggling that such a big hullabaloo of a production was created all about a bunch of made up stories about "god."  Everything about this movie was totally over the top from Charlton Hestons escalating facial hair to the crazy over the top score with the loudass horns.

It kind of annoyed me how they portrayed the Egyptians as bad and as atheists of sort (not even faithful to their own gods).  Definitely fodder by Christians for Christians, and that's probably why this long, long movie is remembered so fondly.  Although, I will say that uh they probably spent a lot of money on this, huh?

This would actually probably be a better movie:

North by Northwest

North by Northwest is another movie I really should've seen a long, long time ago.   By the end of the movie I was really into the (musical) theme.  The drunk driving scene was pretty funny/fake looking, although I am sure it would look much better on the big screen than it did on my TV.  It made me wonder what Hitchcock would be able to do with today's technology.

La Dolce Vita

I really have no excuse for only having just watched La Dolce Vita.  I tried to a couple of times before, but couldn't get through the three hours until now.  I don't have much to say about it other than that the Sylvia ^ character really was a knockout.  A good old fashioned voluptuous beauty!

Raiders of the Lost Ark

"love you" scene

I recently had the urge to re-watch all the Indiana Jones movies because I don't remember them too well.  My boyfriend's roommate happened to have Raiders of the Lost Ark on DVD so I caught this one the other day.  I remember the other movies being better than this one!

ゴジラ

Today I finally watched Gojira, AKA Godzilla.  I was pleasantly surprised to see Takashi Shimura in the film!  Liked the music.  Liked the eye patch guy.  Thought overall that the film is more engaging than most old monster flicks.  It's pretty amazing that they made 20+ of these movies.  The scene where the guy is reporting his own impending death was pretty bleak.  It's really fascinating to see the Japanese post WWII mentality through this film (re: the atomic bomb).  It's pretty funny/interesting that Gojira goes down in a cascade of bubbles rather than something more dramatic like a laser beam.
