Footloose

Footloose isn't as bad as I remembered it.  It does drag as it goes on, though.  It was interesting to see young Sarah Jessica Parker...although at the end where the two dudes beat the other two dudes up, like really hardcore, and the girls are all like YEAH WOO HOO AWESOME...that was pretty terrible.  Like, do people really like seeing other people get the crap beat out of them? ...what?

Although, I must say that a prom with GLITTER RAIN would be awesome.

A lot of shots of feet being, uh, "footloose."  Not sure if they're were just trying to go with the flow on that one or if we had some foot fetish people on this crew.

It was the "special edition" DVD.  lol @ this movie having a "special edition."

Also, this movie is awesome for inspiring this:

9 to 5

I remember watching 9 to 5 when I was a kid and wanted to re-watch it.  Dolly Parton is awesome!  The 9 to 5 song is cool even in spite of the fact that it's annoying when rich famous people sing songs about the working man.  I wish this movie had a more awesome feminist revenge, but I'll settle I guess.  The outfits are a highlight, too.

Also 9-5?? Yeah right, more like 8-7.

Some Like it Hot

Some Like it Hot is one of those old films that translates well to contemporary times.  It's still very funny entertaining.  I'd actually never seen a Marilyn Monro film before!  She really is beautiful and charming.  I love her voice--it was so much softer than I'd expected.  Some Like it Hot is really a worthwhile film.

The Killing Fields

The Killing Fields is the story of the Cambodian genocide, but more than that, it is the story of the deep friendship between two reporters ^ one American, one Cambodian covering the war.  Its themes are the ones you'd expect from such a movie...war as hell, friendship and human triumph through Pran.  The destruction of war is masterfully rendered...distorted limbs and broken bodies enter the foreground as the camera pans and continue on into the background...one is left with the thought of the carnage that continued on off screen.

Some of the music choices were a bit...odd.  I'm talking about some of the more techno/electronic background songs they used.  They certainly were interesting but they were a bit out of place.  However, as corny as it is, I did like the use of the Beatles's Imagine at the climactic ending scene.  It's fitting, after all the awful things depicted in the movie, to use a song that dreams about the end of war, religion, prejudice and all the other ills of the world.

Truly a beautiful story.

Oh.  And there is this army guy in the beginning and I was like "OMG! The guy from Coach!" As in the TV show coach from the 90s.  Weird. I hadn't thought about that TV show in like, a decade.

The Ten Commandments (1956)

god was pretty impressive

So, I'm an atheist but I still figured that I should watch The Ten Commandments.  The movie was kind of interesting at first because the story is familiar (I was brought up a Catholic), but after more than three hours my interest in the doings of these nutcases waned considerably.  It's pretty mind boggling that such a big hullabaloo of a production was created all about a bunch of made up stories about "god."  Everything about this movie was totally over the top from Charlton Hestons escalating facial hair to the crazy over the top score with the loudass horns.

It kind of annoyed me how they portrayed the Egyptians as bad and as atheists of sort (not even faithful to their own gods).  Definitely fodder by Christians for Christians, and that's probably why this long, long movie is remembered so fondly.  Although, I will say that uh they probably spent a lot of money on this, huh?

This would actually probably be a better movie:

North by Northwest

North by Northwest is another movie I really should've seen a long, long time ago.   By the end of the movie I was really into the (musical) theme.  The drunk driving scene was pretty funny/fake looking, although I am sure it would look much better on the big screen than it did on my TV.  It made me wonder what Hitchcock would be able to do with today's technology.

ゴジラ

Today I finally watched Gojira, AKA Godzilla.  I was pleasantly surprised to see Takashi Shimura in the film!  Liked the music.  Liked the eye patch guy.  Thought overall that the film is more engaging than most old monster flicks.  It's pretty amazing that they made 20+ of these movies.  The scene where the guy is reporting his own impending death was pretty bleak.  It's really fascinating to see the Japanese post WWII mentality through this film (re: the atomic bomb).  It's pretty funny/interesting that Gojira goes down in a cascade of bubbles rather than something more dramatic like a laser beam.

Zombie Strippers!

cool title screen

Zombie Strippers! with Jenna Jamison.  Caught this at a friend's house. This isn't as bad as you'd think.  Actually kind of funny/entertaining.  Like zombie stripper shooting billiard balls out her vagina entertaining.  There are also a bunch of philosophy references.
